エドワード・エルリック (Edward Elric) - My Favorite Japanese Anime Character

こんちわ!

When people talk about Japanese Anime, they usually bring up Naruto, Dragon Ball Z, or Detective Conan, but my personal all-time favorite is Fullmetal Alchemist (鋼の錬金術師), the 2009 version. It was first written and illustrated by Hiromu Arakawa (荒川 弘) as a manga series. It was adapted to anime twice and I prefer the later one. It attracted great attention once it was released and it still considered to be one of the best anime.

In this series, all characters are depicted very carefully and designed to be memorable like the arrogant but very capable Roy Mustang, but my personal favorite would be Edward Elric (エドワード・エルリック).

He and his younger brother Alphonse Elric experienced extreme grief and pain when their father left them and their mother passed away.  They tried to revive their mother by performing the worst taboo among alchemists, the Human Alchemization (人体練成), but they failed. Because of this, Alphonse lost his whole body and Edward lost one leg and an arm trying to save Alphonse.

But Edward did not give up. As a responsible brother with hope for the better, he and Alphonse joined the government army, hoping to find a way to bring Alphonse back to normal body. He is righteous and just, helping people along his way. He is capable and wit. He always use his wisdom to defeat his enemies and move forward. As a human being, sometimes he is reckless and sometimes he fell into despair, but he can always correct his mistake and continue going forward. He's got the spirit that I can definitely learn from.

  1. I was re-watching Full Metal Alchemist like a month ago! I totally agree with you that the second version of the anime is definitely better, it follows the flow of the original manga to a larger extent. It's amazing how you can actually gain life experiences from watching anime, did you join the Japanese Club? I heard that they host Anime Movie nights and I'm pretty sure it would be a nice experience B) As you can see from my blog post, my favorite anime character is definitely Detective Conan hehehee

  2. Your post reminds me of the eagerness when I waited for the lated episode to be released. For me, 鋼の錬金術師 is the best, even compared with One Piece or Naruto. It's also because of this anime that I learned the word 'おとうと’. The brotherhood is so touching!

  3. We have the original manga (in Japanese) at the library. You may want to read sometime in the future!
